If you didn’t catch Salma Yaqoob demolish UKIP leader Nigel Farage on today’s The Politics Show it is certainly worth it.
The Respect leader made absolute mincemeat of Farage’s claims that the tiny numbers of women in Britain who wear the burka present a security risk and are symbolic of a divided Britain.
Especially worth looking out for is Farage’s response when questioned if this policy was a ploy to win support from BNP voters. “We have nothing to do with the BNP,” he hastily responded, perhaps not realising that this didn’t address the question in any way.

Thanks Joe, what’s incredible about both that interview and the Politics Show is how incoherent Farage’s points are. It really comes across as lashing out in all directions about it. He’s evasive on what the purpose of a ban is and it is very obvious to me that’s it clearly a pitch to BNP supporters. In doing so though, it will drag the entire discourse on race even further to the right.
The Quran does not state that it is compulsory for women to wear the Burka but personal choice and freedom are paramount here and it seems strange for a supposedly free country to impose such a law to ban the it.
So, here we go.
It is my choice to separate myself from you and your society.
It is my choice not to integrate.
I will send my children to school in full Burka.
etc
None of the reasons to wear a Burka seem to be positive to the rest of society. There is the importance of personal freedom of choice. The fact that it is women that wear them seems to be acceptable but what if hoodies took a liking to them. After all, it’s just about personal choice and nothing to do with anybody else.
oh c’mon like bnp supporters haven’t switched to labour or torries – in a sense your saying that bnp supporters are racist neo-nazis which is ridiculous argument.
Scott, this is an old argument. But yes, the BNP is inspired by Nazi ideology. This isn’t controversial.
Nigel Farage is one of my favourite politicians, with recent talks of the UK’s position in the EU, he has made several incredibly important points about why we should leave the EU. But this interview appears to show a dark patch in his career, with him quite clearly being a little bit in the wrong. I hope he never ends up in such a cock up again!
