The double standard could not be more stark. Those Arab governments who just this week sent troops into Bahrain to oppose peaceful pro-democracy demonstators, and who have shot unarmed people down in the streets, have now supported Western military action against Libya, to protect a pro-democracy rebellion, and to defend the innocents.
Sky News last night surpassed themselves for bias, with the voice over saying “there have been further violent protests in Bahrain”, as their own film showed Bahrain’s police murdering unarmed bystanders in a drive by shooting.
The shrill chorus that “we must do something” about Libya includes people who opposed even a call for a ceasefire when Israeli jets were bombing defenceless civilians in Gaza.
And as two new civil wars unfold in Africa, the British news is full of oil-producing Libya; but there is not a word about the looming tragedy in Cote d’Ivoire, whose chief export is cocoa.
